Cali, Valle del Cauca, October 17, 2024 -The start of the most important summit on biodiversity in the world is approaching: the Conference of the Parties (COP16), which will take place from October 21 to November 1. The National Government, under the leadership of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Knowledge, announces the programming of the cultural agenda, consisting of approximately 280 artistic, cultural, and academic events in 25 venues in Cali, Colombia.
“The country’s commitment proposes a focus on Cultural Peace with Nature, aiming to harmonize cultural, social, and economic practices with conservation and respect for the environment, promoting peaceful and sustainable coexistence,” says Juan David Correa, Minister of Cultures of Colombia.
Most of the programming will take place in the Green Zone, covering 350,000 square meters on the Bulevar del Río, where there will be four stages (Cultures and Arts, La Retreta, Pacific, and Farallones), a Tertuliadero, and an Indigenous Maloka, among other spaces.
There will also be events in the extended Green Zone, with activities at the Jorge Garcés Borrero Departmental Library, the La Tertulia Museum, the Departmental Institute of Fine Arts, Yawa, the Center for Science, Art, and Technology, the Municipal Theater, the Jorge Isaacs Theater, the Banco de la República Library, the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, the Pascual Guerrero Stadium, among others. There, we will have audiovisual projections, exhibitions from the Network of Museums affiliated with Minculturas, presentations of theater, dance, and circus, and a series of concerts at the Farallones Stage every night starting at 7:00 p.m.
This will be complemented by two Biocultural Routes, resulting from the agreement of Minculturas with organizations and popular organizational expressions with artistic, community, and peace culture agendas. One route will pass through Ladera, Siloé, and points of resistance, while the other will develop through the five communes of Eastern Cali. The routes will include spaces such as the Grutela Theater in Commune 16, the Terrón Colorado neighborhood, the main park of the Llano Verde neighborhood, and the Sucre neighborhood, among others. Additionally, this participatory agenda will be complemented by over 50 artistic proposals from Eastern Cali that will circulate on the stages of the Bulevar del Río, showcasing the creative power of these popular sectors.
The cultural agenda will be divided into nine segments represented by animals from the Colombian Pacific. This is a creative proposal from Minculturas and the Cali design agency Casa Ternario to engage citizens in the activities, as well as to invite each attendee of COP16 to reflect on environmental care and the role of cultures and the arts in this process.
On one hand, the rufous hummingbird will accompany the segment “Mucho Gusto,” focusing on the use of local and seasonal ingredients, ecological practices, and education about responsible eating. The segment “Soul and Body” will be dedicated to dance, theater, performance, and other performing arts under the flight of the white heron.
The white-headed capuchin monkey will represent the projection of films, documentaries, and audiovisual works that explore environmental, cultural, and social issues. Meanwhile, the humpback whale will be the emblem of the musical segment with free concerts from October 20 to November 1.
“One Hundred Years of Vorágines,” accompanied by the ocelot, will explore cultures, arts, and knowledge in the context of conservation and protection of biodiversity. The blue crab from the Pacific arrives with “Plástica no plástico,” emphasizing the sustainable use of materials and reflecting on the relationship between art, nature, and society.
On the other hand, “Saber saberes” will explore and celebrate ancestral and traditional themes, promoting the conservation of cultural and natural heritage alongside the green turtle.
