Bogota, September 19, 2024 – On the road to COP16, the most important global summit on biodiversity, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has reaffirmed its commitment to lead joint efforts with the Regional Autonomous Corporations (CARs) to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in the country. For this reason, the CARs will play a key role in COP16, actively participating in the official agenda of the event and promoting innovative initiatives throughout the national territory.
The Ministry of Environment, together with 31 Regional Autonomous Corporations (CARs), led 23 regional meetings to update the Biodiversity Action Plan to 2030.
Thus, in collaboration with 31 CARs and three Urban Environmental Authorities, significant progress has been made in updating the 2030 Biodiversity Action Plan through 23 regional meetings where pacts for biodiversity conservation were signed.
Additionally, 24 Corporations included in their four-year plans (2024-2027) provisions to harmonize their actions with the goals of the National Action Plan, ensuring an integrated and coherent approach to biodiversity management at the regional level.
The Ministry has ensured the active participation of the CARs in COP16, including their representation in the Scientific-Academic Subcommittee and the organization of key events on the official agenda.
Key participation of the CARs in COP16
The Ministry of Environment has also ensured the active participation of the CARs in key COP16 governance spaces. Two representatives of the Corporations are part of the Scientific-Academic Subcommittee, which was in charge of the evaluation and selection of events for the Green Zone and the Colombia Pavilion.
As a result of this joint work, the CARs presented eight proposals for events that were accepted and incorporated into the official COP16 agenda.
In addition, in the Plazoleta San Francisco, the Corporations will have 430 green businesses and other activities, 37 presentations, 16 talks and several cultural spaces and exchange of knowledge with ethnic communities.
Se ha coordinado la inclusión de la agenda de las CAR en el sitio oficial de la COP16, reflejando la diversidad de actividades y negocios verdes que presentarán durante el evento.
Finally, on September 26 there will be a space for conversation between the 33 directors of the Corporations and the chief negotiators of the COP16, with whom the central issues of Colombia in terms of biodiversity will be socialized.
